How it all began:

Fifteen years ago three highly qualified and motivated retired engineers met up with development expert Anton Kohler. Their vision was to build a foot operated, rust free irrigation pump, which could be reproduced economically in developing countries. After many hours of designing and experimentation, in 1994 the inventors presented their work to the press. For their pioneering invention Joseph Dobmann, André Zumstein and Robert Gilli received the first Impulse Prize which was presented to them by the community of Emmen. The prize was used to get the first project off the ground in India- under the expert guidance of Dr. Anton Kohler and Mr. André Zumstein. The demands on the experts from developing countries increased rapidly. In July 1998 the Association ‘Water for the Third World’ (W3W) was founded, providing the legal structure through which cooperation with donors, private industry, sponsors, and official institutions could be arranged. Today W3W has more than 20 active members whose goal is to spread the new small-scale irrigation technology to voluntary agricultural development programms. By doing so, they hope to contribute to reducing poverty for as many people as possible. The Pedal Pump was scientifically tested by the University for Technology and Architecture in Luzern and was evaluated as outstanding.
